What to Look for in a Realtor

Buying a home should be a team game. While only you have that perfect vision of your dream house in mind, the more people you have on your side throughout the process, the easier it will be for you to focus on what matters. Ask friends and family about advice from their last mortgage or home purchase. Browse forums for first-time buyers. This is where having an experienced mortgage broker can make your experience all the better. One other indispensable member of your team is your realtor. Choosing the right realtor for your personal situation can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. At Mortgage West - The Mortgage Centre, we have years of experience with all sorts of home-buying journeys. We want you to get the most out of your mortgage and purchase, so here is a list of things to consider when looking for a realtor:

Local Knowledge is Best

You might have seen several lawn signs, or even ads for certain big name realtors, but if they are not from your local area—even just a few towns over—they might be lacking key insight into the areas in which you’re most interested. That isn’t to say you should immediately put aside someone who is making headways in the business; just ask them about their experiences in your area. If you are looking to move somewhere farther, this is even more important. Your realtor should have the best knowledge of the local real estate market possible. Once you have a few realtors in mind, ask for references. You can also ask friends and family for recommendations, but always follow these up with your own checks.

Get a Team Player

Like we always say, buying a home is a group effort. More than just working well with your broker and the seller’s agent (all of which are incredibly important!), a good realtor should make you and your needs a priority. You won’t be your realtor’s only client, and if they truly care about the work they do, they will be dedicated to each and every one. Visiting a property or drawing up contracts can take a few hours, and the real estate market is incredibly fast paced. You will likely place a call or two to the office when your realtor is out; knowing that their assistant and team is up to the task of dealing with your concerns or last-minute adjustments can be an immense relief.

Even in the ideal world where the first house you visit is the perfect one for you, you will be spending a lot of time with your realtor. You have to trust that they will adhere to your priorities and budget and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure you get the home you want. It is perfectly alright to decide against a particular realtor if things “just don’t feel right”: in the coming weeks, you’ll be driving to viewings, pouring over listings together, and see so many kitchens you’ll lose track! Through it all, your team should be by your side, with advice and a smile.
